When I saw the mannequin wearing this sequin slip from Free People, I secretly rolled my eyes, thinking this was another fashion nightmare that I will need to grit and bear. But when my sis did the crazy thing and tried it on, it really wasn't half bad. Actually, pretty okay. ...Fine, so it was amazing.
Sequin have come a long way since its days of being an over-worn holiday getup (I mean really, how many girls are going to wear a sequin top for New Years before they call it quits?). If paired with the right casual accessories, it can lend its hand in bringing a little festivity to any outfit, without being so cliché. Give the sequin just a little peek out of a slash dress and keep your admirers guessing. Or, just tuck in the slip into a pair of no-fuss shorts and prove you don't need a special occassion to go glitterati. Remember to keep everything else simple yet pretty--the flowered sandals and dainty hoop earrings will do just the trick, and the legendary Stila gloss (the shade matches the sequins!) will let your lips do some of the talking too.
It all started with my obsession for fowl-inspired hair accessories and the fringe bag as made famous by Vanessa Hudgens last fall, but I just didn't know how it all came together--until now. The economy isn't looking up yet, so may as well have some fun and channel your inner flapper. A ritzy fringe mini and some feathered headband are no-brainers, but go the extra mile with some other flapper-faves: long strand pearls gets an update with multiple chains, bring on the shine with a patent Mary Jane pump, and sport a perfect cupid-bow 'kisser.' But remember not to wear 'em all at once, since you'll risk looking like a Halloween nightmare. Now all you need is to get the flapper lingo down--and you'll be the bee's knees!
Earth to trends! Mother nature endowed us with some buzz-worthy motifs, and my current rave: branches. Leaves or no leaves, I think it strikes a certain ennui that makes me wanting more. Whether you want to go decor or fashion, its a great way to add some fun sophistication to your design--and having it on any season besides winter is what makes this interesting! So if you dare to go bare of florals this spring, opt to extend a little branch.
Give us a break! Well, that's precisely what the goddess of fashion seems to be doing for us this season, and words like oversized, relaxed, boyfriend and slouchy are being thrown around like it's going out of style. Hope it never does.
The trick with this is to avoid looking like a big frump, so when you choose to go loose, keep everything else sleek: pair a fitted top and show off your trim waistline with silk shorts, show off your arms with boyfriend jeans and cargo pants, get leggy with oversized sweaters, and make sure that the blazer is thrown over an otherwise body-conscious outfit. Of course we want to keep the soft silhouette (its oh-so-effortless looking, no?) but a stylish outfit should never be so comfortable you could lounge in them!
Just when you thought you've gotten a trend figured out, you get a fashion wake-up call. For me, this usually comes from my uber trendy sister. I haven't been a big fan of animal prints, but when she came to me with a birthday wishlist consisting this Vix Swimwear ($148), I found myself oogling it, and I went on to give some much needed second look on this classic trend.
Sure, it may have gotten a tacky, un-classy rap but this print has been reinvented since then, much to my liking. It's now popping up in a different color for a not-so-in-your-face look (well, this one is technically a cheetah print but you get the idea) or on unexpected items, like these Tory Burch ballerina flats ($225) or hidden demurely under a white tank in the form of a push-up bra ($50). Thank goodness for sisters!
I am in love with this new trend that's popping up everywhere from the red carpet to the runway (have you guys seen the new "nude-neutral" smoky eyes look?). For some of us neutral-nuts (like yours truly) this isn't such a big step, but I think it's fantastic that people are finally realizing the versatility of the nudes--beige, cream, peachy, whatever you want to call it.
The best thing about this trend is that you don't need a how-to to master it. Much like its more well known go-to color cousin, black, it basically goes with anything. And I mean anything. Is it only a matter of time before the LBD is re-defined to mean little beige dress? Only time will tell.
Of course I own a watercolor print dress, but with all the watercolor prints running around, I could understand why people would be inclined to avoid it, thinking they'll just be lost in the smuge this spring. Or maybe you feel scared that a watercolor print dress is just too much? Well fear not.
What about opting for something that's not a dress? I think this cardigan ($59.50) is a fun way to give your LBD a twist, and pulling it over a shirt and a flowy mini-skirt will look and feel fresh.
What else? A wallet ($20) or a scarf ($89.60) would be a great way to add a splash of color to any outfit. Bringing a print into your accessories are a lot less scary for print-phobes who get anxious about going full-frontal with a print trend.
This goes with florals and tribal prints too. Toning it down by incorporating it through unexpected accessories or fashion pieces will make you look like a style pro!
Okay, so as I checked out BellaSugar's how-to on choosing a red lipstick, it rekindled my inherent fear of red lips. But then I looked through my bag and closet, only to find a bundle of reds--like my gorgeous French Connection Coat, above, to a Louis Vuitton's Epi leather agenda.
So if you're still a little shy about painting your lips and nails a flaming red, look to these red accessories instead. I am totally drooling over that Elsa Peretti pendant. My sister has one in silver, and it does wonders to any casual outfit--imagine what red would do!
